Context

Navigating the Now approached us to transform a leadership manuscript into a refined editorial publication. The brief was to create a cohesive visual language through custom illustrations, purposeful typography, structured layouts, and supporting design elements that elevated the reading experience while reinforcing the book's core message.

Strategy

Navigating the Now needed to work as two books in one: a philosophy text carrying 100 leadership principles, and a hands-on workbook with journaling prompts, trackers, and reflection exercises. The strategy was to design a single system that could hold both modes without feeling like two different books stitched together. The sailing metaphor running through the author's writing, “you are the captain,” charting a course through storms, became the throughline that unified them. Navy and gold formed the core palette, while a custom nautical illustration set, including a compass, ship's wheel, waves, and rope knots, gave the book a visual vocabulary. Section dividers then separated the “read” chapters from the “do the work” chapters while keeping both within the same visual world.

Creative Direction

The interior system runs on a clear typographic hierarchy: serif display type for part and chapter titles, clean serif body text for the philosophy sections, and structured boxed layouts for the workbook pages. This allows journaling prompts to feel distinct from the prose without disrupting the rhythm of the book. Custom illustrations, including a ship’s wheel, sun and waves, a soaring gull, and a knotted rope heart, were hand-built specifically for the book rather than pulled from stock. Each of the four part title pages features its own illustration, giving each section a distinct visual identity while keeping the book connected through a consistent nautical visual language. The workbook spreads, including trackers, “Captain’s Log” journal pages, and weekly/daily habit grids, use a consistent boxed-and-scalloped frame language. This creates a clear visual distinction between pages designed for writing and pages designed for reading and reflection. The cover carries the same system into the retail-facing piece: a hand-illustrated sailboat cutting through radiating linework, with navy and gold on the front. The full back-cover copy, author bio, and pull quote continue the same editorial treatment, creating a cohesive package from cover to interior rather than treating the back cover as an afterthought.
